Some Like It Hot

Record soaring temperatures across the nation, global warming and fires in the Boundary Waters. Looking at current events, I’m reminded of the song by George Palmer, Some Like it Hot. The lyrics sing, “feel the heat burning you up, ready or not, some like it hot.”  It’s certainly challenging to submerge one’s self in heat. I know my rabbits Buster and Flopsy, felt that way last week, as the laid by their frozen gallon ice jugs.

Heat is unnerving to say the least. Rising temperatures cook our bodies from the inside out. Ninety-five degree weather quickens our hearts and makes our pores perspire. But on the flip side there are many benefits to heat and its restorative properties. It encourages expansion, like a cake rising in the oven or plants flourishing in the garden, provided they get enough water. Heat loosens us up, giving new flexibility to our joints and muscles. After a fire heat creates new growth and seeds to burst open. And when you study machinery under the pressures of heat, the weak joints give out and something breaks down.

Whatever the situation or lessons, we are definitely standing in front of choices.  As the song says, “feel the heat pushing you to decide.”  As a world we have to figure out how to survive and cherish the Mother Earth, for she is what allows us to breathe, fills our stomachs with nutrients and shelters us from the cold. Each one of us makes choices everyday from how to stop global warming, do I follow my passion or what will I wear today?

So I encourage you to make a choice today for the environment and for ultimately yourself. Go out for a walk, hug a tree, place your bare feet in a lake and the dirt. Or simply touch a peace pole and pray. For as Mama Earth so poignantly stated it last Sunday, each one of us can influence over ten thousand other humans with one single action.

Praise be to Thee, O Lord,

For all Thy creatures,

And especially for our Brother, the Sun

Who gives us the day,

And who shows forth Thy light,

Fair is he and radiant with great splendor:

To us he is the symbol of Thee, O Lord.

Praise be to Thee, O Lord,

For our sister, the moon,

And for the stars.

Thou hast set them clear,

Beautiful and precious

In the heavens above.

Praise be to Thee, O Lord,

For our brother, the wind,

For the air and the clouds,

For the clear sky and for all weathers,

By which Thou givest life

And the means of life

To all Thy creatures.

Praise be to Thee, O Lord,

For our brother, fire,

By whom Thou givest us

Light in the darkness.

He is beautiful and bright,

Courageous and strong.

Praise be to Thee, O Lord,

For our sister, water,

Who is so useful to us,

Humble, precious and chaste.

Praise be to Thee, O Lord,

For our mother, the earth,

Who sustains and nourishes us,

Bringing forth diverse fruits,

Flowers of many colors,

And the grass.
